In a telephone conversation with US President Barack Obama on Monday evening, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi gave the green light to the use of his country's air force in NATO's Libya mission. The move raised many eyebrows, given that Italy has repeatedly resisted joining the NATO-led air strikes amid Berlusconi’s allegations about his country’s considerable contribution to the alliance’s war effort in Libya. Berlusconi apparently referred to several air bases Rome earlier made available for NATO forces.
